Stephen Marsh

Stephen Marsh was destined to have a future in racing, being the son of master trainer and Melbourne Cup winning jockey, Bruce Marsh. After gaining his trainers license he joined forces with Bruce for the 2002-2003 season. This successful three year partnership produced outstanding Group 1 victories with RUSSIAN PEARL in the Bayer Classic and HAIL in the Zabeel Classic.

When Bruce Marsh relocated to Singapore in 2005, Stephen branched out on his own and was met with immediate success. With ambitions to build on these early winners Stephen moved his operation north to Cambridge in 2008.

Relocation paid off and while still young, Stephen has firmly established himself as one of NZ’s most successful trainers with a consistent stream of winners seeing him finish in the top five trainers in the premiership for the last five seasons.

With over 1000 winners, 80 of which are group and listed victories, Stephen has trained winners up and down New Zealand and across the Tasman where he is experienced in travelling horses to the Australian carnivals. Some of the headline winners he’s most well known for include UGO FOSCOLO in the 2000 Guineas, RUUD AWAKENING in the 2YO Diamond Stakes and Karaka Million 2YO, THEE AULD FLOOZIE in the Thorndon Mile and a breakthrough Group 1 win in Australia with SOFIA ROSA in the AJC Oaks. In 2019 he trained the 2019 New Zealand Derby winner in CROWN PROSECUTOR and has enjoyed recent sucess with both two year olds such as Ulanova and star filly Velocious winning group ones, as well as older horses such as Mercurial and El Vencedor both winning at the highest level from 1200-2000m.
